Author Spotlight: Jon Ronson

I just finished listening to my fourth audiobook by Jon Ronson, who is now cemented as one of my favorite nonfiction writers ever.  All of his books are clever, funny, and intensely interesting.  Ronson is also a great audiobook narrator.  Without further ado, here are my mini reviews of Ronson’s works.

The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Review: This is one of the most interesting, insightful, and humorous nonfiction books I have ever encountered!  Ronson’s wry, irreverent writing style contrasts with his sensitive, thoughtful attitude toward mental illness to create a work that will have you laughing one minute and pondering serious questions the next.  Ronson is also an excellent narrator of the audiobook.  But regardless of the format, The Psychopath Test is an extremely engaging, thought provoking book.  I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning more about the human mind and how our society deals with madness.

The Men Who Stare at Goats*

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Review: Let me first say that this audiobook has the best narrator ever.  Sean Mangan’s voice is perfectly suited to the serious yet ridiculous nature of the text.  But of course, I loved The Men Who Stare at Goats for more than its narrator – the content of the book is a fascinating, bizarre, and disturbing exploration of the American military that, much like Ronson’s The Psychopath Test, will have you cracking up one minute and pondering important issues the next.  Overall, this is an intensely interesting, hilarious, and thought provoking book, and I highly recommend it.

Them: Adventures with Extremists

Rating: 4/5 Stars

Review: Although it ends rather abruptly, Them is a fascinating, hilarious, and thought-provoking read.  Jon Ronson is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite nonfiction writers.

The Family Portrait: Four Short Stories about Domestic Life

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Review: A wonderfully hilarious set of stories that only makes me love Jon Ronson even more!  (And it was free!)

*The Men Who Stare at Goats was made into a movie with George Clooney.  I haven’t seen it; is it any good?
